Zimbabwe

In Zimbabwe, ActionAid Denmark supports building local democracy, conflict management and peace building and trade justice – issues coming from a historic lowpoint. The work focuses particularly on women and youth.

Since the beginning of 1990, Zimbabwe has experienced a downfall from being an exceptionally well-running economy to being one of the world's poorest countries with an enormous inflation, a big majority living in absolute poverty and a very big unemployment rate.  Education and health systems used to be among the best in Africa but are now in ruins.

This poverty is caused both catastrophically economic and social policies as well as corruption, political violence and suppression.

ActionAid Denmark supports education and capacity building of partner organisations in civil society working with our core focal points in Zimbabwe, i.e. building of local democracy, conflict management and trade justice. Furthermore, from time to time we provide support for other groups also working with democratization, conflict management and equal rights.

After three decades of autocratic despotic rule it is no surprise that many Zimbabweans consider decisions regarding their lives something they have no or little influence on themselves. We support organisations working with civil society education in democratization and rights, and support the education of paralegals advising people in their local area.

How we work

Together with ActionAid Zimbabwe, ActionAid Denmark is working to end poverty in Zimbabwe by support to build local democracy, conflict management and peace building as well as trade justice. Women and youths are special focus groups.

- We support advocacy for citizen's rights to gain influence on decisions and their own life
- We support information projects about democracy and peaceful co-existence
- We support a free press in Zimbabwe
- We support civil education in human rights
- We support organisations working with land rights and trade justice.
