Tree planting in Western Region
Lack of food security, fire wood problems and threatening soil erosion are issues adressed when MS partner Christian Community Services carry out tree planting campaigns in Western Region
By Edward M. Alitsi, Development Worker09. October 2006
MS partner organisation Christian Community Services (CCS) is promoting agro forestry land use system to address food security, soil erosion and fuel wood problems in Western Province of Keny, one of the country’s poorest regions.
With technical assistance from MS Kenya CCS has trained over 1500 farmers between April and July 2006. Training focusing on the concept and practice of agro forestry was conducted in Busia, Teso, Mt Elgon and Vihiga districts.
Practical demonstrations on how to establish various agro forestry systems were also conducted. Given the small landholdings in Western province agro forestry holds the answer to food insecurity and poverty problems.
