The MS board recommends association with ActionAid

The MS board unanimously recommends to the upcoming General Assembly to sign an association agreement with ActionAid International.

31. May 2008

At the board meeting on May 30rd, the MS board unanimously decided to recommend to the general assembly to sign an association agreement with ActionAid International. This year the general assembly in MS takes place on September 13th and 14th.

With this decision the MS board wishes to:

* contribute to the transferral of greater influence to the civil society in the South
* improve coordination and cooperation between popular organisations all over the world
* ensure that popular organisations obtain more influence on international political decisions
* ensure that MS gets access to knowledge and experience from a large international network
* ensure that MS gets a bigger ‘audience’ for its work for democracy, global citizenship and the fight against poverty
* influence an international organisation in the making to become a democratic federation with popular anchorage in 50-60 countries.

The board has taken this decision after several years of exploration, discussion and reflection by all levels of the organisation.

“I’m very pleased that the board has made this important decision unanimously. MS is in the a very positive development process and today  we stand together with a visionary strategy that build on the best elements from our long history but also reflects the actual challenges and possibilities of the 21st century. The problems faced by the citizens of the world demand for international solutions. A peaceful and sustainable development can only be ensured if popular organisations join forces in a common front for greater equality and justice”, says Trine Pertou Mach, chair of MS.

If the general assembly supports the board’s recommendation, MS will – in the years to come – transfer direct responsibility of the programmes in South to local ActionAid organisations in these countries. MS will become a lead agency in ActionAid on the work for democracy and good governance. Based on many years experience within the organisation of ‘people to people’ , MS will be able to inspire ActionAid to develop its work for intercultural collaboration and global citizenship.

MS will continue to be a broad and well anchored Danish member organisation engaging Danes in global issues and influencing Danish policy with respect to those issues.
