Democracy in focus

We live in the age of democracy. For the first time in history, the majority of the world’s population lives under democratic rule. This upsurge in democracy reflects the transformation of the world’s political landscape in the final quarter of the twentieth century, where the number of democratic states has more than doubled.
The reason that MS has chosen to focus on democracy is because we are acutely aware of the need to generate and facilitate a trans-global debate which involves people from all levels of society. We are also aware of the pressing need to create and maintain public awareness about democracy issues, especially in relation to the question of how democracy affects the lives of; the poor, social minority groups and the underprivileged. In our view, the subjects of democracy, human rights and development issues are irrevocably intertwined.
In our opinion, respect for the rights of our fellow human beings and their right to social and economic development, should be at the heart of the debate on democracy. It is our belief that democracy is not only a goal in itself, but also an important tool in the battle against poverty. We regard democracy as being a universal right, irrespective of; gender, ethnic origin, nationality, culture or social and economic status. Universal human rights such as, equality and freedom should be enjoyed by all. Democracy doesn’t just concern itself with politics and arbitration, it also provides a set of basic values which should be respected by every society in the world.
